More news on this project from Dutch East India. Here you go.. RICHARD THOMAS Soggy Martyrs LCD016 Recently referred to in The Guardian as "an electronics fiend whose collocation (!) of skewed squiggles suggest he could happily be the next Aphex Twin" there is however a lot more to Richard Thomas as this album will testify. Double bass, flute, trumpets, guitars and drums - as well as the aforementioned electronics - weave a highly melodic, accessible and emotionally charged web of sound that veers from "electronic jazz folk" to Fall like space rock whilst always remaining undeniably unique. Definitely not the same old bollocks. The album will be preceded by the Squarepusher/Thomas EP 'I Am Carnal (and I Know That You Approve)'. Richard is currently completing remixes for Laub and Piano Magic and preparing for various live performances. Press for "I Am Carnal" (a collaboration w/SquarePusher): "There's quite a few post DJs out there engaged in this sort of crunching and pulping rhythmical exercises, but it's not always easy to distinguish between those forging a vital musique concrete for the 21st century and those who've apparently sat around with a tape machine recording the sounds emanating from a breaker's yard and to put it on wax. Squarepusher and Richard Thomas are definitely in the former camp. Here, they take it in turns to pulverize and reshape each others' tracks. The title track and its sinister overtones belong to Thomas, Kerb-crawling on a down dirty double bass and licked with a loopily seductive riff achieved on what sounds like a homemade sitar, it's further fucked up with a crossfire of noise and effects, like a neurological impulse sent haywire by the tape looped, promiscuous ickie girl vocals. Squarepusher then drags the track down into a clanking dungeon of sonic sleaze on 'Slope' before on the flipside Thomas scrunches it up even more, only to pass back the resultant misshape on to Sqaurepusher (and here's where they ruin the effect a little) 'Richard Is Dick Extended' who liquifies it with an ambient treatment. Fiendishly brilliant." Anybody heard this yet? When is the release date? And does anyone have any Susumu Yokota recommendations - I've tried for 3 years now to resign his _Cat, Mouse, and Me_ to the scrap heap as simplistic and too catchy. I still play it about once a week ... are his others on the same wavelength? _Images 1983-1998_ is beautiful, so I'm thinking others of his releases fit these molds (regardless of the link with Harthouse). Thanks ahead of time. J PS - anyone got a copy of Ultramarine's 12" on New Electronica they would care to part with? "I am an acme of things accomplished, and I an encloser of things to be."
